Hand wood burned wall art reproduction of Caravaggio’s Judith Beheading Holofernes in maple with frame.
This piece is entirely handcrafted. It started as a piece of 1/4″ maple sanded to 600 grit. I then drew and wood burned by hand this interpretation of Caravaggio’s classic painting into the maple, and gave it a light coat of boiled linseed oil to deepen the maple grain. Finally, I cut, assembled and mounted the frame onto the piece.
The original artwork has always inspired me, both in the stunning painting and the story behind it. Finished in 1599, Caravaggio’s Judith Beheading Holofernes depicts a tale from the Catholic and Eastern Orthodox Old Testaments. Judith, a bold and beautiful widow in the village of Bethulia, rebukes the cowardice and faithlessness of the village leaders threatened by the mighty Assyrian army at the gates. She ingratiates herself to Holofernes, the enemy leader, later beheading him with his own sword while her aged servant eagerly waits to collect the head. The
leaderless Assyrians disperse, saving the Israelites. The painting was rediscovered in 1950 and is currently part of the National Gallery of Ancient Art in Rome.
To me this piece has always stood for the hidden strength of women, for courage in the face of certain death, for faith in self and the belief that the Lord helps those who take the initiative.
Overall measurements are 9″ x 6.75″ x .75″. Some depression marks from the pyrography process are visible on the surface in the darker areas. The frame does not include glass or plexiglass, letting the viewer see the wood directly. The art rests about 1/8″ into the 3/4″-deep frame, making it pop from the surface behind it.

Please note that the frame is permanently attached to the maple. Changing the frame would destroy the current frame, but would not likely hurt the maple.
