Horse Head Pendant Etched on Ivory Bakelite Set in Bronze Polyclay

I saw this old ivory colored button in a shop that specialized in etching images on old buttons. The shop owner used a laser engraver to etch this magnificent image onto the ivory background. I bought the button because I admire the nobility of a horse’s head and also because I could see how to set it into a piece of jewelry. As a lone button, it would not be very noticeable.

I worked my metallic gold and copper polymer clay into just the right bronze mix and soft condition to receive the impression of the button. I then created the random patterns around the perimeter of the polymer clay oval. I then carefully removed the horse head etched image and baked the polymer clay with the depression remaining so that I could glue the horse head image into the background pendant when it cooled.

After I had glued and clamped the image under a protective cloth overnight, I then gently buffed the bronze clay and attached a bronze bail. For the cord, I triple plied two shades of hemp cord on my spinning wheel and added a bronze hook to fasten onto a lariat type loop at the opposite end of the cord.

At this point, I had achieved the rustic look I was aiming at, so it was time to photograph it and list the pendant for sale.

It is great for wearing over a sweatshirt or sweater with your jeans. You can also take it off the cord and attach it to your cowboy hat if you choose. Obviously, girls, boys, men or women will look very country wearing this piece of jewelry.
