As to the making of this bronze pendant. First of all, I wanted to make a bronze pendant in one of my favorite shapes; that is the paisley. I am fascinated by bronze because of my studies of the Bronze Age in Central Asia. The color of bronze, which is really eighty to ninety percent copper, was both strengthened and brightened by adding the mineral tin. As a result, bronze made very beautiful amulets and other jewelry and household items. The bronze clay that I used in forming my pendants is this copper and tin combination of minerals mixed with a polymer substance that makes it pliable, as one might work with pottery clay.
Once I have kneaded the clay, rolled it out on my work surface and then textured it with the images impressions, I laid the template over the impressions, cut it out with my stylus and allowed the first layer to dry a bit. I fired the pendant for four hours in my kiln and was pleased when it came out almost as it is just now. I washed it, dried it and burnished it so that it shines just as a reddish gold bronze can do. I hung it on a black satin cord, and now you can have a beautiful handmade, unique pendant. There will not be another like it in all the world.
I have made photos of the pendant suspended on a black cord and on a bronze wire. I can put it on a bronze wire choker or torc for you for an extra cost of $12.00, if you prefer it to the black satin cord, which is simply tied in the back and allows plenty of cord to slip over even the largest head. The wire torc or torq would fasten at the back of the neck.
Length of cord – 26 inches (66 cm)
Dimensions of pendant – 1.5 inches x 2.5 inches (4 cm x 6.5 cm)
