I made these earrings of silver triangles with translucent green aventurine tube beads dangling from them in a candelabra arrangement. These three aventurine translucent tube beads that dangle from each ornate silver plated triangle are a cool note to cool down a warm colored summer wardrobe. Aventurine is not as well-known in the gemstone domain as are garnet, opal or topaz and others that serve as birth stones in gift jewelry. Translucent green aventurine is the easiest class of the gemstone to recognize. The opaque variety of microcrystalline quartz is also aventurine but is more earthy in appearance. It contains small inclusions of shiny minerals which give the stone a sparkling effect known as aventurescence. It sparkles but appears heavier and less finished on the surface.
It is used by jewelers the world over and is mined in India, Chile, Spain, Russia, Brazil, Austria, and Tanzania. It is a 6.5 on the Mohs scale of hardness. Aventurine is often mistaken for amazonite or jade.
One gem expert writes that “It is interesting that the name for the stone is derived from an accident. Sometime during the 18th century, Venetian glass workers were preparing molten glass when copper filings accidentally fell into the batch producing a glass with sparkles. The name aventurine comes from the Italian “a ventura,” which means”by chance”.”
I also read somewhere that aventurine has been used as a lucky talisman and is a popular stone for gamblers.
I find amusing the fact that the aventurine gemstone was found by chance and then gamblers used it for “bonne chance” or Good Luck.
