My favorite things to sew for dolls are fantasy and ethnic costumes. What makes it even better is when the vision in my mind is realized and it’s better than I imagined. This is an outfit that’s been brewing in my head for over a year, and now that I finally found time to make it, it surpassed my wildest expectations!

This gorgeous doll sari was primarily made from a lovely, cotton sari my friend brought me from India (I didn’t destroy a gift — she brought it to me for the purpose of making doll clothes!). The warm, plum tones trimmed in gold are sure to look stunning on any 18″ doll. The top is fully lined, and the sleeves and neckline are trimmed with embroidery I cut and folded from the original sari. It closes at the front with metal snaps. The skirt and overskirt are also made from the original sari. The bottom of the overskirt is particularly beautiful with its gold and silver embroidery. The skirt has an elastic waist to make dressing your doll easy, and all of the seams are sewn and then serged for durability and neatness.

The chiffon wrap is not from the original sari, but complements it nicely due to its color and lovely drape. The fabric varies in color from the lightest purple in spots to deep plum in others, and is patterned with gold medallions. All of the edges of the wrap are finished with a rolled hem in gold. It is sewn into the side seam of the skirt and attaches to the shoulder with a metal snap.

I’ve also included a very simple headpiece made from gold trim and a gemstone. It stays on as a decorative display piece, but if this is a gift for a child, you may want to pin it to the doll’s hair so it doesn’t fall out during play.

All the pieces of this outfit were handmade in my smoke-free, dog-friendly home. The fabric was washed prior to sewing to help avoid ink transfer stains on your doll. This listing includes the top, the skirt with the attached chiffon wrap, and the headpiece. The doll and any other items shown are for display purposes only and not included in this listing. This outfit is intended to fit 18″ soft-bodied dolls such as American Girl, Madame Alexander, and Our Generation. It will not fit Journey Girls or Kidz N Cats dolls.
