Do you know a history buff? A Civil War fanatic? How about someone who appreciates fine, useful things that carry meaning and tell a story?

This pen will make an incredible gift. The wood body of this handcrafted pen was recovered from the spot where Confederate General Thomas Jonathan “Stonewall” Jackson was mortally wounded by his own men May 2, 1863, at Chancellorsville Battlefield in Virginia. The wood type is unknown, but most closely resembles pine. (See photos of their production at my blog here: http://hopeandgracepens.blogspot.com/)

The first of five in production from the branch recovered at Chancellorsville, the wood of this pen received a stabilization process in blue liquid acrylic, hardening the soft wood while giving it its wonderful hue. I love how this wood turned out, which is probably why I finished this pen first. The blue acrylic filled in voids where it’s darkest, mixed with the lovely yellow in soft areas making a beautiful green, and didn’t penetrate the hardest parts of the wood, leaving them their original yellow. Together, the colors are magical and add to this pen’s value.

I turned this pen on a lathe, shaping and then sanding up to 10k grit with some special paper I brought home from Japan. It then received a thin coat of 100% pure tung oil to accentuate the grain. After drying overnight, it received 10 coats of durable cyanoacrylate buffed to a high gloss shine.

The wood was then placed in a chrome Civil War pen setting commemorating the Model 1861 Springfield rifled musket. The nib and tail are shaped like the bullets fired from these muskets, the most popular firearm used rifle during the Civil War. The pen clip is in the shape of the Springfield. This pen comes with a card about the Springfield musket (pictured) and a certificate of production with details of how the pen was made.

The pen extends with a twist to write in black ink. With ink refills available in any office supply store, this beautiful piece of history will be cherished for many years to come. With its incredible looks and historic value, it will break the ice and start conversations wherever it’s used. Add this pen to your cart as a gift for that Civil War buff or as a special treat for yourself.
