The wood body of this handcrafted pen is tamarind wood stabilized with a green pigmented acrylic. The green mixed with the lovely grain and natural tan colors of the tamarind to result in the beautiful mottled green pen body you see today.
After turning and sanding by hand on a lathe up to 10k grit for maximum shimmer, this wood received a thin coat of 100% pure tung oil to make the colors pop. Then it received 9 successive layers of durable cyanoacrylate buffed to a high gloss shine.
The setting features a brushed brass Celtic knot filigree with a clear green stone in the tail.
Together, they’re the perfect accent to the beautiful wood. The black ink cartridge extends with a turn of the tail to write smoothly in ballpoint ink.
And since the ink cartridge is easily replaceable, this stunning handcrafted wood pen is sure to be cherished for years to come.
I named this pen “Portach na hÉireann,” Irish Gaelic for “Irish Bog,” because of lovely coloring calls to mind the fens of the Emerald Isle. The Irish island is covered by fens and bogs in up to 17% of its surface area, exceeded only by three other countries. Peat and bogs have played a large role in Irish history and culture.
