Calming blues abound in this handmade gemstone necklace. The blues of sodalite, Swarovski night blue crystal pearls and jasper is the mix you will find. To start, I had received this jasper heart pendant in an order which was called Russian ocean jasper. Since I know ocean jasper is only found in Madagascar I have to discount that. However, I was rather intrigued by the jasper stone with it’s gray color and slight tinge of blue. I knew this would go very well with the sodalite nugget stones that I had. Sodalite is a lovely royal blue shade with grayish white markings and patterns and totally natural in color. It has also been called “Princess Blue”. The sodalite nuggets are free-form shapes. To enhance the blue I selected rich Swarovski Austrian crystal pearls in a shade called night blue. These crystal pearls from Swarovski have a leaded crystal core that gives them a heavier feel and warms to the skin. In between the stones and crystal pearls I added antique silver pewter discs.

I finished off the necklace with a unique smooth pewter heart toggle. The heart has a cut out style which adds design while keeping the finish smooth to wear comfortably on the neck. The necklace itself is 19 inches and the pendant drop will add an additional 1 1/2 inch drop.
The story of sodalite is interesting. Discovered in 1806 in Greenland, sodalite did not become important as an ornamental stone until 1891 when vast deposits of fine material were discovered in Ontario, Canada. It has since been named Princess Blue after Princess Patricia who, upon visiting Ontario some time after its discovery, chose sodalite as interior decoration for Marlborough House in England.
