About Cordwain Higgler

A year ago (June 2012) we decided to take the leap into a new life and became self employed doing the thing that we both love, making beautiful hand crafted items from leather. Our goods have a strong historic influence born from a background in history, art and archaeology, and a love of nature. These elements have been drawn together to form Cordwain Higgler. We decided very early on that we wanted to create our own designs, and these start with a pencil and paper drawing rough sketches, changing aspects as we go along until we are happy with the design. after that technology kicks in and with the use of the computer we transfer our designs, ensuring we have the correct dimensions, and send the art work off to some very nice people who work their magic and send us back the zinc dies we have ordered. Then we can start work on the piece Our leather comes from Britain’s last oak bark tannery, we use natural fibre threads and fittings are made to last, for instance solid brass, not plate to prevent rust. Every aspect is done by hand, the cutting, edging, applying the design, sewing, riveting, dyeing, polishing, We make our own beeswax polish using beeswax sourced from an apiarist who has bee colonies around The Beachy Head area in East Sussex. Our aim is to provide quality English craft items in a world of mass production. We hope that it would be extremely unlikely that you will come across anyone else with an identical item. The unique qualities of leather, means that it improves with age and becomes a more personal item. The pride in our work comes from knowing that our items will last and that the owners, we hope, become more attached to them as time goes by. View all posts by Cordwain Higgler
